Used Guitar Inspection Checklist
Neck & playability
- Sight down the neck: it should be nearly straight, not twisted.
- Play every fret on every string - note buzzing, dead spots, or notes that choke out.
- Check the truss rod cover area for cracks or repairs, and that the neck joint is tight with no gaps.
Frets & fingerboard
- Look for deep grooves under the strings in the first frets (expensive to fix).
- Run a finger along the fret ends - sharp sprout can be filed, heavy wear costs more.
Electronics (electric)
- Plug in. Turn every knob and flip every switch - listen for crackle, dropouts, hum that changes when you touch the strings.
- Test every pickup position at volume.
Body & hardware
- Check around the neck pocket, headstock (a classic break point) and strap buttons for cracks or repaired breaks.
- Tuners should turn smoothly; the bridge should adjust, not be rusted solid.
Questions to ask
- How long have you owned it, and are you the first owner?
- Any repairs, refrets, pickup or wiring changes?
- Why are you selling it?
- Has it been kept in a smoke/pet home or gigged heavily?
