Guitar Stands & Wall Hangers
A guitar on a stand gets played; a guitar in a closet does not. From manufacturer specs (not hands-on testing): auto-lock neck stands are the most secure, A-frames are the cheapest, wall hangers free up the floor.
Nitrocellulose finish warning - read this first
Many vintage and Gibson-style guitars use nitrocellulose lacquer, which can react with some rubber and foam paddings over time, leaving marks or softened finish ('stand rash'). Hercules states its SFF foam did not react with the large majority of finishes, including nitrocellulose, in tests up to six months, but also says there are thousands of lacquer formulations it cannot test - check your guitar's manual (Hercules FAQ, checked 2026-10-17). Stand rash on nitro guitars is also widely reported by owners and repairers. Safest practice for a valuable nitro guitar: put a clean 100% cotton cloth or cotton glove fingers over every contact point, or store it in its case. Polyurethane finishes (most modern budget guitars) are far less reactive.
